Symbols represent objects, pictures, written words, sounds or something else and refer to thoughts, ideas, notions, beliefs and feelings. Some symbols are commonly used, such as white rectangle on the red background signifying “stop”, others have special sense and stimulate deep feelings. The examples of these symbols are the crucifix in Christianity or the Star or David in Judaism. We all are surrounded by symbols. Every day we face with something that has a symbolic meaning. You can find symbols on money, in commercials, music compositions, books, politics and so forth. To understand the meaning of a symbol a viewer has to know what this symbol represents. For example, the Chinese "yin" and "yang" symbol seems a funny picture with black and white colors for people that don't know the secret significance of the sign. They may enjoy its aesthetic side, but they don't see more than that. On the contrary, in case a person knows the origin of the symbol he or she sees not just an image, but an idea of deep correlation of things in our lives. During the history of mankind symbols were vastly used in art. In such a way, one object on a painting tells a lot about the situation, the thoughts of the painter, his view on life and beliefs. To understand the underlying sense of a music composition or a book we need to pay special attention to details. Sometimes we have to read critics on a certain work of art in order to get the idea of the author. This is because the symbols language is quite complicated. So what are the most widespread symbols in art and what do they imply? Amongst the most common symbols applied in pieces of art are a book, candles, a clock and mirrors. A book generally implies knowledge and learning. If you see a burning candle on a picture it's in most cases a symbol of faith in God or time passing. From the other side, an extinguished candle stands for death and mourning. A clock signifies the time passing. On this point the famous painting of Salvador Dali called “Melting clocks” refers to an idea that nothing in our lives complies with some rules. And eventually, a mirror implies efforts to get the truth, but in some situations it just stands for the vanity. Thus, symbols are everywhere in our world. We just need to be a little more attentive to details to see them.
